PRESENTATIONS
02/17/09
Total points: 100
(plus 10 bonus points for winning teams)

OBJECTIVE
You will participate with several classmates in one of four competitive team presentations scheduled at different times during the semester. On each presentation day, two teams will compete against each other by making presentations to their peers. The task of all of the teams is to address different challenges faced by journalists attempting to design the best possible online news site using multimedia content.

CONTEXT
A newspaper group has hired your company to wrap your mind around what the best multimedia site for the future should be. You have been assigned to one of four different aspects of online news sites to make a presentation to your co-workers for inclusion in the overall presentation your company will make to the news organization. To ensure the best ideas are brought to the table, your bosses have tasked another group within the company to make a similar pitch and have assigned both groups to present on the same day.  In other words, you are competing against your peers. You will be assigned to a two-person team that will prepare a presentation on one of four topics. On four designated days this semester, two teams will make presentations on the same topic. After both teams have presented their work, the class will vote on which team they thought made the more compelling and interesting presentation for inclusion in the company’s finished report. That group will get 10 points for extra credit.

EXPECTATIONS
After looking at online news sites, your group should present bad examples of the attribute online.  Explain why you think it is a bad use of the media and then present an exemplary use of the media.  If you cannot find an ideal example, then let us know why. Maybe your ideas are not in place just yet.  That would be useful for us to know.  At the end of the presentation, give us a list of “must haves” for your media in any effective visual journalism site.  (This approach might not apply to the fourth group. This group should involve itself in research and study of online news use.  I would encourage you to think about conducting your own informal survey on news use among your friends and family. )
