SLIDESHOW WEB POST
This assignment will explain one easy way to get your slideshow on the Web and link to it from your Online Portfolios.
• In Soundslides, click “export” when your project is complete. That creates a smaller publish_to_web folder inside your Soundslides project folder. The entire publish_to_web folder must be copied to a webserver for your slideshow to work online.
• Rename the publish_to_web folder like this: ViethRehearsalSS. Make sure your surname comes first, followed by a one-word description, then SS. You want to keep this name as short and simple as possible so your URL won’t be too complicated. SS is my shorthand for slideshow.
• Send me and Darcy and email asking us to copy your finished slideshow to the JMC webserver and telling us the name you just gave it and where we can find it. Wait for confirmation from us that we have put it on the server.
• The URL will be like this: http://jmc.ou.edu/vieth/ViethRehearsalSS/. Check it and make sure it works.
• As the slideshow is running, pick an image you want to use as your Online Portfolio link and click the pause button. Use the Apple-Shift-4 command and your cursor to create a frame around the portion of the image you want to save. When you release the mouse button, a .png image will be placed on your desktop.
• WordPress won’t import .png images. Convert the slideshow image you just created to JPEG by opening it in Photoshop and using the Save As command to change the format. A new .jpg file will appear on your desktop.
• Go to the Dashboard of your WordPress Online Portfolio. Open your Midterm Project page, or create one if you haven’t already. Decide where you want to put the slideshow link. Click the Add Image icon. Navigate to the .jpg file you just created. Click Insert Into Post. Click Update Page.
• Open your Midterm Project page again. Find a place next to your photo image to insert a link. Click the Insert/Edit Link icon. Type in the URL or something like this: Click here to view slideshow. Click Insert. Click Update Page. Check to make sure it works.

WEEK 1 ASSIGNMENTS
JMC 3003 Multimedia Journalism
Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009
SELF-BI0—Write 500-word self-bio. Make it interesting. Write it like a feature story. Use a creative lead. Make it revealing. Tell me something distinctive about you. Your self-bio doesn’t need to focus exclusively on your interest and experience in journalism or your career goals, but mention them in passing so I’ll know where you are headed. Let me know how this class fits into the overarching trajectory of your life. If you have written a self-bio for me in a previous class, pretend you’ve never met me before. Include your cell phone number and preferred email address. Put your Word file in the Self-Bio dropbox in D2L by the end of the day Friday.
FIRST FIVE—Read the First Five Graphs handout closely and come to class next Monday prepared to talk about it in depth.
SYLLABUS—Read it very carefully. Make a note of any provisions you would like me to clarify. You will take a short syllabus quiz at the beginning of Monday’s class. It’s important that we resolve any ambiguities now.
SHOPPING TRIP—Buy the textbook (“Advancing the Story,” Wenger & Potter). Buy your mini-DV videocassette tapes, AA and AAA batteries. Make sure you have a set of headphones you can bring to every class. Don’t buy your external hard drive just yet. We’re checking to see if we can get a discount. Here’s a link to the recommended model:
